Smoke control areas and what you can burn
Many towns and cities in the UK are smoke control areas. In those zones you must not emit smoke from a chimney, and you may only burn authorised fuels unless your appliance is specifically exempt.
Authorised fuels include properly certified smokeless manufactured fuels (such as the Homefire ranges we track) and certain anthracites. Traditional house coal is not authorised and its sale for domestic use is restricted in England. Wood can only be burned in a Defra-exempt appliance.
Check your postcode on the Defra interactive map or with your local council—coverage is expanding in some areas. Fines for breaches exist (civil penalties in England).
The price board only lists fuels that are authorised for general use in smoke control areas. Always confirm the latest rules and the exact product certification before you buy.
